Description
xDouble, ruffled mophead blooms from late spring straight through fall on a tidy, container-perfect shrub.
Frill Ride® is a reblooming bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Hokomabavi') prized for its fully double, frilled florets that give each mophead a layered, almost rose-like texture. Because it flowers on both old and new wood, it keeps producing fresh blooms all season instead of finishing in a single early flush. Like all bigleaf hydrangeas, the color responds to soil chemistry — rich blues and purples in acidic soil, warm pinks in alkaline soil — set against glossy, deep-green leaves. At a compact 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, it stays neat and rounded, making it one of the easiest hydrangeas to place.
Why growers choose Frill Ride®
- Months of bloom, not weeks. Reblooming on old and new wood means flowers from spring through fall, even if a late frost nips the earliest buds.
- Distinctive double florets. The ruffled, fully double mopheads read fuller and more refined than a standard single-flowered hydrangea.
- Color you can shape. Soil pH lets you steer blooms toward blue, purple, or pink to suit your palette.
- Right-sized for real gardens. A naturally compact 2-to-3-foot habit fits foundations, borders, and large containers without constant pruning.
- Cold-hardy and dependable. Reliable across USDA zones 5 through 9 in part sun.
Use it along a shaded foundation, massed in a mixed border, tucked into a part-sun courtyard, or grown in a generous patio pot where its double blooms can be seen up close. It is also a generous source of cut flowers for summer arrangements.
