Description
xA compact, evergreen woodland shrub that hangs strands of creamy white spring bells over glossy foliage that shifts color through the seasons.
The Enchanted Forest® Impish Elf™ Pieris (Pieris japonica 'Shy') is a dwarf, broadleaf evergreen prized for year-round structure and an early-spring flower show. In late winter it sets cascading panicles of small, urn-shaped flowers that open creamy white above leathery, deep green leaves, while new growth flushes in warm bronze-red tones that mature to green. Staying a tidy 3 to 5 feet tall and wide, it brings a refined, layered texture to shaded and part-sun corners where many flowering shrubs struggle. Its naturally rounded, mounding habit makes it a dependable evergreen anchor in foundation plantings, woodland borders, and shaded entry beds.
Why growers choose the Impish Elf™ Pieris
- Early-spring bloom. Drooping clusters of dainty, lily-of-the-valley-style bells appear well ahead of most shrubs, extending interest into the dormant edges of the season.
- True evergreen structure. Glossy, leathery foliage holds through all four seasons, giving beds form and color even in winter.
- Colorful new growth. Fresh spring shoots emerge in bronzed red and copper tones, layering a second wave of color over the established green canopy.
- Compact, well-behaved habit. A mature size of 3 to 5 feet keeps it in scale for smaller beds, foundations, and containers without heavy pruning.
- Deer resistance. Like other Pieris, its foliage is generally passed over by browsing deer, a real advantage in woodland and rural landscapes.
Use it as a shade-tolerant foundation planting beneath windows, as a textured companion to azaleas, rhododendrons, and ferns in a woodland border, or as a refined evergreen presence in a large container on a part-shade patio.
