xA living piece of sculpture: glossy emerald sprays of fan-like foliage on a slow, dense, naturally tidy dwarf evergreen that never outgrows its spot.
The Dwarf Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Nana Gracilis') is a refined, slow-growing conifer prized for its rich dark-green foliage held in twisted, shell-like fans that give the plant a layered, almost architectural texture. It grows slowly to a compact 3-6 ft. tall and 2-4 ft. wide, forming a softly pyramidal, irregular mound that reads as deliberate and elegant rather than sheared. Its modest size and four-season color make it a standout in foundation beds, rock gardens, entryways, and large containers, and a quiet anchor among lower perennials.
Why growers choose the Dwarf Hinoki Cypress
- Year-round evergreen color. Deep, glossy green foliage holds through every season, giving structure and life to the garden in the dead of winter.
- Distinctive texture. Cupped, fan-shaped sprays layer over one another for a sculptural, hand-crafted look no other dwarf conifer quite matches.
- Stays in scale. Its slow growth and naturally compact, pyramidal habit mean it won't crowd a foundation or swallow a small bed the way fast conifers do.
- Cold-hardy and adaptable. Comfortable from zone 4 through 8, it shrugs off hard winters while thriving in full to partial sun.
- Low maintenance. Tidy by nature, it needs little to no pruning to keep its handsome shape.
Use it as a specimen near an entry where its texture can be admired up close, as evergreen structure in a mixed border or rock garden, in a foundation planting, or in a large container flanking a doorway. Set several in a relaxed row and they make a low, soft, slow-building screen that stays neatly in bounds.
