Dodecatheon meadia, commonly known as Midland Shooting Star, is a stunning native perennial celebrated for its unique spring blooms. The flowers feature dramatically reflexed pink to lavender petals with contrasting yellow and purple centers, rising above a basal rosette of green leaves.
This species naturally occurs in prairies, open woods, glades, and meadows, making it a perfect choice for native plant gardens and restoration projects. Blooming in mid to late spring, Midland Shooting Star provides an important early-season nectar source for native pollinators, especially bees.
The plant prefers well-drained soil and performs best in full sun to partial shade. After flowering, the foliage gradually goes dormant, allowing it to blend seamlessly into mixed native plantings.
