Amorpha canescens, commonly known as Lead Plant, is a highly valued native prairie shrub known for its silvery-gray foliage and striking purple flower spikes tipped with bright orange anthers. Blooming in early summer, it is one of the most important nectar sources for native bees and butterflies.
This deep-rooted perennial is exceptionally drought tolerant and well adapted to dry prairies, open grasslands, and sandy or rocky soils. As a nitrogen-fixing species, Lead Plant also helps enrich soil, making it beneficial in restoration and native landscape plantings.
Slow to establish but extremely long-lived, Lead Plant is a cornerstone species for prairie restorations and native gardens focused on sustainability and wildlife value.
